Planting for Planet Some time ago when we were all talking about the regeneration of our village our group thought that it would be a good idea to enhance the appearance of the area by planting trees. We thought that planting the trees would serve us in a number of ways e.g. It would make the place look good, it would give our children the much needed shade in the summer when they are playing out on the green areas and we are doing our little bit to help with the Global Warming problem. We started looking for funding some two years ago and were pleased when we received support from Ground Work Wales, The Communities First Partnership and Caerphilly County Borough Council. The surrounding area was looked at quite closely and we decided that we would plant Native Trees that would fit in with the surrounding woodland. We have chosen 18 Sites to be developed and it is hoped that the children from Graig y Rhacca who attend the following schools Graig y Rhacca Primary school, Machen Primary School, Tyn y Wern Primary school, Ysgol y Castell, Bedwas Primary and St Helens R.C. School will be taking. This means that all the children living here will have an area to look after each area will have a plaque to say which school planted the trees and a catalogue will be produced so the children can record the growth, foliage and fruit from their trees.
